NOVEMBER 2005
MEETING
WHEN:
THURSDAY the 10th
7pm
WHERE:
Fisher Comm. Center
Marshalltown, IA

PROGRAM:
SR-71 BLACKBIRD
BILL FOX

WHAT'S FLYIN' THIS WAY !!!
Our meeting this coming Thursday, November 10th, looks to be very exciting. Bill Fox of Waterloo, who was a Lockheed engineer intimately involved with the design and testing of what ultimately became the SR-71, will be our guest speaker. Bill will have a short video and slide presentation revealing some of the recently declassified secrets of the fastest airplane ever built. We will be meeting at the Fisher Community Center, Room A, at 7 pm. Garry will be placing a notice in the T-R inviting the public, and we invite all other EAA'ers from around Iowa who are interested.
WHAT FLEW BY !!!

No one can say we don't have flying on our brains in this chapter! The hour or so before our last meeting saw 8 member airplanes flying around the patch. It WAS a great afternoon weatherwise, and the decision to have our October meeting at the airport was evidently an excellent one. The crowd had gathered at Gary and Chad Nablo's hangar to watch the airplanes fly by. Even Gary with his L4 Pup, and Chad's Minimax were putting air under the wings. Also, Gary invited a friend (sorry, I didn't get the name) with a high performance RC helicopter who put on a dazzling display just as dusk fell on the airport.
The meeting started with approximately 20 members and a few guests present. Three Aerospace Engineering students from ISU, Mark Ketcham, Isaiah Warnke, and Garrett Homan attended and ultimately gave an impromtu program on an ambitious project they are involved in. They are collectively designing and building a next-generation light sport aircraft from scratch which they intend to fly to Oshkosh 2006. The project is called AirISU and much more information can be obtained at www.airisu.org . They will be keeping us up to date on their progress.

MEMBER NEWS & UPDATES
Chapter Christmas Dinner

Our president, Garry Brandenburg is working out the details for our Christmas Banquet. More information should be available by the meeting on Thursday.
Roadside Ditch Cleaned We had a good turnout on October 22nd for our biannual ditch cleanup. It was good to see newer members helping out. Participation in chapter activites can be very rewarding. Just ask a new member!
Gary Nablo showed off a door frame he has built for his L4 Pup. He made it out of aluminum.
Dave Cheung has submitted the paperwork for his airworthiness certificate. He has been doing some taxiing.
Dave McCurry helped Paul Adams drill lots of holes and rigged tthe wings to the Fisher Celebrity biplanes fuselage.
Ray Robinson has 10 hours of hover time on his Scorpion II.
Larry Lukehart has finally passed the 40 hour restriction on his Mustang II. He was one of those out flying last meeting.
Chad Nablo has over 15 hours on his Minimax. The fuel tank developed a very slow leak which has probably been fixed by now.
Corey Butcher finally finished his hangar and has moved the Voisin wings and tail into their new home. He is only seven months behind schedule.
Ron Hodges has finished the wings for the Legal Eagle and is now in the process of mounting the wings to the fuselage for strut rigging. After this is accomplished he will be ready for covering. He also received his half vw engine kit and is working on putting it together.
IT'S DUES TIME! Only $10 a year. And if you send it in the next 15 minutes, we'll throw in another year for just $10 more. That's just $20 for two years membership! WHAT A DEAL!!! (You don't wanna miss this great newsletter, now, do ya??)
Mail or give it to Charles Kuhlman, our Sec/Treas. His address is on the front page of this newsletter.

Chad Nablo and his Team MiniMax
Sorry Chad. This was suppose to be in the last newsletter.

RC Helicopters

Gary Nablo is also involved with radio controlled helicopters. That's his at the top of the picture. He invited a friend to the last meeting who brought the high performance 'copter at the bottom and gave a demonstration of it's ability. I guess that would make 9 aircraft that were flying around!

Fun Fact
Merle Liese's
first aircraft ride was in the Des Moines Register's Pitcairn Autogiro as a reward for gaining two new customers on his newspaper route! Guess WHEN that was.
