WHAT'S FLYIN' THIS WAY !!!
As I write this, the temp outside is dipping toward the freezing mark. (I'm not ready. arg :^\ ) BUT, we are going to attempt one last meeting at the KMIW airport! New members, Gary and Chad Nablo have been kind enough to offer their hangar, located next to Garry Brandenburgs hangar, as the gathering place, and tell us a little more about their interests in aviation. Bring your lawnchairs, warm socks, blankets, hot chocolate; kinda like going to a fall football game, but more fun!

WHAT FLEW BY !!!
WOW! What a great time we had last month at our Ice Cream Social. Members, their families, and friends began gathering late in the afternoon. Chad and Gary Nablo, whose hangar is located next to Garry's, pulled their new airplanes out for everyone to admire. Gary purchased the L4/N3 Pup restored by Dave McCurry who flew it around the patch for everyone to admire. Chad has just purchased a Team MiniMax which was located in Missouri. Both are beautiful airplanes and both owners are rightfully proud. (I thought Gary was going to rub through the fabric detailing it to perfection!) By ice cream time, over 40 people had gathered! Again, we have to direct our gratitude to Ray and Sandy Robinson for dishing out the great homemade frozen delight. It was just great! Many others brought different types of sweet goodies to go along with the ice cream, so there was no lack of something good to eat. To top it all off, Don Lutes gave everyone an exciting account of his P-51 checkout ride last year in Kissimee, Florida.
Our Ice Cream Social was not accompanied by a fly-in this year, but our chapter is getting good at having a good time in September!

There are rumblings on the internet that the board of the Sport Aviation Association founded by Paul Poberezny, is in the midst of deciding the future fate of the organization. Word is that even with reasonable attendance at the fly-in at Urbana, funds are tight, and even more so, a shortage of volunteers for the fly-in, which is critical for a successful event. However, since the announcement, there seems to be a groundswell of support gathering and may have an impact on the decisions to be made this fall. You can show your support at the addresses below.

GONE WEST
Graham Lee, the designer of the Circa line of WWI replica aircraft, passed away somewhat suddenly due to cancer on Sunday, October 2nd 2005. Many around the world found him to be a good friend and advisor who was always willing to share his love of amateur sport aviation. He was a firm believer in affordable aircraft that the average person could build with simple tools. He was nearly always available and willing to answer questions on aircraft design in general, as well as giving excellent support to his own designs. Being a little eccentric, Graham was always quick with his opinion on a wide variety of subjects which just added to his dynamic personality. This writer had come to know Graham over the internet. He was willing to look at my Voisin plans and gave me a couple of pointers which was thoroughly appreciated. Though his Nieuports were his main brainchilds, he was a principal designer of the ASAP Chinook from the early days of ultralighting as well as the Beamer line of ultralight designs in the last five years. Most recently, he was working on a replica of a DePischoff biplane which he had tentatively named "The Foamy". He had a significant impact on many homebuilders over the years and will be greatly missed. www.nieuports.com
Robert Hanson, the radio operator on the "Memphis Belle" passed away Saturday, October 1st, 2005, in Albuquerque, NM. Bob was the last surviving member of the bond tour crew of the "Belle." He succumbed to congestive heart failure at the age of 85. Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene, the same sweetheart whose name was carried next to his window on the "Belle."
