WHAT'S FLYIN' THIS WAY !!!
Corey and Paul P.
I know that many of you were at Airventure in Oshkosh, 'cause I saw you there! For those of you who didn't get a chance to see it personally, we will have pictures and lots of stories about the show. Come early and bring your eats. Garry will have grills hot and ready.
Many of you know that the new Sport Pilot/Light Sport Aircraft rules were released the week before Airventure. Bring your questions and we will try and find answers. As with all federal rules, it is not easy reading, but the main points have been put into a FAQ on the EAA website. If you have a chance to read it before Friday, you can help answer questions.
As always, make sure you introduce yourself to new members and visitors. Everyone likes to hangar talk!

WHAT FLEW BY LAST MONTH !!!
Paul Adams openned up his hangar for our July meeting and displayed his projects for us to drool over. Or slobber, depending on what you were eating ;-) Paul had his Q-2 flying, and his Celebrity spread out on the bench showing off his craftsmanship. Thanks go out to Paul and all who attended including visitors from Iowa Falls and Newton.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL FLY-IN!
The day soon approaches that we will be having a great time at Fernald eating ice cream and looking over airplanes of all kinds. Ray Robinson, the host, wanted me to remind everyone of a few important items. First, homemade ice cream is the only way to go! Second, YOU don't have to bring anything but your cravings and an airplane if you have one. That means nothing else is needed. Not even money! It's 'NO CHARGE'.
And Ray says we need to use the Ames CTAF frequency 122.7 to keep things safe and in order. I have included a flyer that you can post at your local airport if it's not posted there already.
Q2 IS ALL PAINTED!
Charles Kuhlman reports..."THE Q2 IS ALL WHITE ONCE AGAIN!!!! Hurray!!
The past week-end (with Harry's assistance) I put the final white paint on the repaired canard, the elevator control surface and a few other small areas that needed touching up. The repair is finally finished after a MUCH TOO LONG [7 years to the month] "out of action" period.
Remember that fateful day when I unintentionally touched down just short of the start of the concrete runway in my overzealous effort to achieve a shorter landing rollout distance. Well the canard and elevator control surface attached to it, cracked and broke. I then slid and skidded to an uneventful stop a short distance later. The rebuild for that err in judgment has now been completed. While we had it out of action and in easy position to do so, Harry & I made an axle realignment on the wheels. This should help the ground handling immensely according to others who have made the same correction. The Q2 has always been a little tricky to keep headed straight down the runway, especially if one starts to get a little out of control.
I probably will be calling on some of you to help move it back to the Airport in August. [How many times can a person ask a "friend" to help them handle the front half of an aircraft fuselage before they are no longer your friend??? For some of you it will be going on 6 times, I think.
Just thought I would share the major milestone event with you."

Late breaking news says Burt Rutan has a direct competitor for the race to space.
The Canadian da Vinci Project Team, based in Toronto, Canada, made the announcement during a public roll-out of its completed Wild Fire spacecraft, Thursday, Aug 5th, 2004, at its Downsview Airport hanger in Toronto. The da Vinci Project Team, widely heralded as a contender for the $10 million, will pursue its own ANSARI X PRIZE space flight attempt on October 2nd... just days after the first SpaceShipOne X Prize flight. A reusable helium balloon lifts their spacecraft to 80,000' and then launched to suborbital space.
