WHAT'S FLYIN' THIS WAY !!!
What a busy summer!! I hope you have been able to spend some time aviating and enjoying flying and/or building. There are so many fly-ins this year, it's hard to decide where to go and what to do. Not to mention all the non-flying activities that need to be attended as well. Our chapter has had a good year so far and there is a lot more to come.

This coming Thursday the 14th, Dave Cheung will be our host at his hangar just west of the public parking area at the Marshalltown airport. We got a glimpse of Dave's RV-6 project during our open house last month. He is coming along quite well and will give us some specifics of his building experiences. We will also get a count of who will be attending Oshkosh. I would encourage everyone who is going to seek out someone who may want to go with and invite them along, especially if they are just getting into aviation. It's always more fun when you can share the Oshkosh experience with others. I am taking my brother who isn't a big aviation fan, but is a fan of space travel. He is very anxious to see and hear White Knight, SpaceShip One, Burt Rutan and Mike Melville. Maybe I'll get him a ride in an airplane to boot!

As you can see in the header, this newsletter will be for July and August. Your newsletter editor is going to Oshkosh for the entire week and will be hard pressed for time when I get back. So keep this one around for next month too. (I can do a quick one-pager if something pressing comes up.)
We will be having our August meeting at Paul Adams hangar at the Marshalltown airdrome on the 11th. Latest word is he has his Fisher Celebrity together for rigging and as we all know, it's the best time to look over the beauty of a wood airplane. Yep, BEFORE it's covered! Hey, and since it's our after-Oshkosh August meeting, I'll bet the grills will be fired up. Come early and bring eats. Bring friends and family too.

WHAT FLEW BY !!!

Our Chapter Open House was another success! We had an estimated 75 to 90 people take a look and ask questions about the ten flying vehicles on display. Dale Benskin pushed out his Meyers and Ray Robinson trailered in his Scorpion II helicopter. Both attracted a lot of attention. Another fun airplane was Dave McCurry's L-4 (N3 Pup) replica with no wings. He has the engine running very well and has the fuselage refurbished. It really looks good. See more pictures on the Chapter website. http://www.voisin35.com/eaa675/Events/05openhouse/index.html

Early morning rain was a real issue on the Fourth of July Fly-in at Iowa Falls. In fact, when I left home, it was very windy and pouring down in major buckets! But when I arrived at the Fly-in at 8am, not only was it NOT raining, but there were three airplanes in the pattern and many on the ground! As of this writing, I don't know what the numbers were, but it looked to be a major success. It cleared up later in the morning for the pilots and planes from the south, so there was good traffic all the way thru the alotted breakfast time. Helicopter and airplane rides were available and those aerial vehicles were busy the whole morning. Our own Ron Hodges and his wife Cheryl took their first rides in the helicopter. "That was All Right!" Ron exclaimed as he climbed out. He added that now he understands why Ray Robinson built a helicopter. Even Cheryl liked it!
There were TWO Stinson Gullwings there. One undergoing restoration in the main hangar, and one flew in. Other planes of interest were a Globe Swift, a Stits Playboy, a Pietenpol, an SNJ-5, and many others.
See them here...http://www.voisin35.com/eaa675/Events/IaFalls/index.html

This writer has to toot his own horn a little too. I attended the "Gathering of Eagles" WWI Fly-in at Gardner, Kansas on the 16th and 17th of June. I trailered my Voisin project down there and what a thrill to have the Kansas City Dawn Patrol set up right in line with me! There were about 14 WWI replicas displayed. About 4 of them were projects. The rest were flying. It was quite a sight to see formations of Nieuports fly by with smoke systems on! There was even a race between a restored Model A race car and a Siemans-Shuckert fighter!
I need to mention that our own Ron Crow was there too as a WWI US Army re-enactor. He was there with his French and German counterparts with a great display of WWI equipment. Don't miss the pictures at http://www.voisin35.com/Updates/gardner05/index.html

CALENDAR
The Calendar format for the newsletter will change a little. There is so much going on that it can seem overwhelming. I get the feeling it uses more space than it is worth. So...
For those of you on the internet, all of the information for aviation events are available in many places. I'm going to continue to list what is MOST pertinent to our chapter, but for events beyond easy reach, I will leave it to you to look it up. I will add links to the websites that have all the info you need. I will also add the links to our website so you can go there anytime and just click away.
If you do not have internet access, and a specific event you are interested in is not listed in the newsletter, just call me and I will be happy to look up the info for you.
Don't forget about our Ice Cream Social in September. I will include all the information in the next newsletter.
And as a side note, I plan on going to TWO fly-ins that day. First to Osceola for breakfast, then to the Ice Cream Social! Will make for a GREAT day of flying AND eating.

A young and foolish pilot wanted to sound cool and show who was boss on the aviation frequencies. It was his first time approaching a field at night. Instead of making any official requests to the tower, he radioed: "Guess who?" The controller switched the field lights off and replied:
"Guess where!"
