EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION TO HOST OPEN HOUSE
The Marshalltown area chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will host a static display of some of their members kitbuilt, homebuilt and other aircraft on Saturday, June 12th from 1 to 5 pm at the Marshalltown Municipal Airport. Anyone who is interested in aviation or the possibility of building or owning your own aircraft are encouraged to attend. Chapter members of the local EAA will be available to show their aircraft and talk about building airplanes out of wood, fiberglass or metal. The public can use this opportunity to see some very well done examples of aviation that generates so much pleasure for their owners. Learn what it takes in terms of time and talent to create your own masterpiece. Local chapter members number about 35. As examples, Dale Benskin of Marshalltown flys his bi-plane, a Myers OTW, a yellow winged ,blue fuselage with its 5 cylinder radial engine over Marshalltown. It's distinctive sound turns heads skyward. The photograph accompanying this story is of Doug Boyd in his ultralight Challenger. Lyle Stolzman of Conrad has an RV-6. Larry Lukehart has a Mustang II, Paul Adams has a fiberglass Q-2 and a Citabria and David Cheung has an RV-6 under construction. Dave McCurry built a Taylor Monoplane out of wood more than 20 years ago and he continues to fly it regularly.Other members include Chapter President Garry Brandenburg, a one-third co-owner of a Cessna Skyhawk. Charles Kuhlman is a co-owner of a Cessna 150 with David Cheung, Harry Dirks, Les Risius. Of special note this year is an effort by the local EAA Chapter members to assist in a local effort to raise funds to help save a piece of Marshalltown history. Aviation enthusiasts would like to commemorate the Niederhauser family of brothers that brought aviation to Marshalltown. A memorial is envisioned to honor Glen, Harry, Robert, Ben and Bud Niederhauser. An additional name is also being pursued to call the local airport, "Marshalltown Airport-Niederhauser Field." Funds are being sought to defray the cost of the memorial and signage. Donations can be sent to The Niederhauser Field Fund, in care of Wells Fargo Bank, PO Box 310, Marshalltown, IA 50158. The EAA has more than 175,000 members world wide. There are more than 950 local chapters that form the grass roots of personal aviation. Founded by Paul H. Poberezny and his close friends in 1953, the EAA has grown into a world famous organization with its convention site located at Oshkosh, WI. Each year, during late July>>^ |
Tornado vs. UltraliteGuess who wins??Corey's hangar and EasyRiser were wiped out by a tornado on May 22nd. Broke up the wings to the Ragwing too. Missed the house by 100 yds. Not much else to say. I'll let the pictures do the talking.
>> and early August, more that 12,000 aircraft of every description will travel to OSH. Over the course of the week long event, more than 800,000 people will attend. Cutline: for photo by Garry Brandenburg Doug Boyd enjoys the freedom of flying his Challenger Ultralight aircraft over the central Iowa landscape. He built the airplane from a kit in 2002 and first flew it in 2003. You can see this airplane and others at an open house and static display of Experimental Aircraft Association projects on Saturday, June 12th, 1-5 pm at the Marshalltown Airport located 3 miles north of the City. During my first night flight, I asked my instructor what to do if the engine failed. "Get the plane gliding in a controlled decent, attempt to restart the engine and make a Mayday call", he explained. "The difference between day and night flying is that the terrain below will not be clearly visible, so turn on the landing light when you get close to the ground and if you like what you see, land." "All right, but what if I don't like what I see?" I asked. "Turn off the landing light.", he said. |

Sport Pilot Rule Returned to OMB The sport pilot/light-sport aircraft rulemaking package has been returned to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for final approval. OMB’s website acknowledges receipt of the rule on June 1, 2004. No deadline for final action is listed on the website. However, when EAA Vice President of Government and Industry Affairs Earl Lawrence visited OMB, along with fellow ASTM Committee chairmen Phillip Lockwood and Eric Tucker, they stressed the need for swift approval of the rule. The rule, which had been withdrawn from the Office of Management and Budget by FAA in late March, is now back at OMB for what is hoped to be the final review before publication. FAA had withdrawn the rule to answer questions presented by OMB, in a procedural move that would keep the rule on-track instead of creating a major setback if it was completely rejected by OMB. This advancement is another major step forward for the rule. Once OMB approves the rulemaking package, it will be returned to FAA for publication in the Federal Register. This year’s AirVenture event will include a major focus on sport pilot as it provides an exciting opportunity for growth in many areas of the aviation community. |
