Chapter 675
Open House

WHAT'S FLYIN' THIS WAY !!!
On Saturday we will once again be having a Chapter Open House day to show the community what we are all about. Last year was a big success with approximately 150 people coming by to meet our members and see what aviating is all about. President Garry has contacted the press to spread the word. See the pending press release on page three that will be in the TR later this week. Notices on the radio will also be aired. All members are encouraged to bring out their plane or project part(s) for display. We can setup all along the west side of the drive, so there is no lack of space. I plan on bringing a couple of bench's and skeleton parts of my current project. A card table with a rib or maybe just a set of plans on it would be very appropriate. Anything related to aviation that would spawn interest and questions. This is probably the best event we have all year to put our most positive face forward. Even if you don't have something to display, just shaking hands, and smiling, and answering questions about our chapter is of great value. Come early to set up so we can be ready for the early bird visitors.
WHAT FLEW BY LAST MONTH !!!
Another positive influence that Chapter members have is introducing young people to flying. On May 8th we were able to squeeze between the haze and rain and fly over 30 Young Eagles. Thanks to all who helped including those from Iowa Falls.
If you have pictures from that day, please bring them to Corey on Saturday so he can get them on the web for the kids to see.

Subject: Green Castle Hangar Concert

Hi, Just wanted to invite everyone in the chapter to the hangar concert scheduled for June 12. This is the 4th year that Green Castle has presented a concert to raise funds for the Bill Kimble Flight Scholarship. Each year we choose at least one high school student to receive a full scholarship to earn their private pilot license. Again this year Charles Wendt, a world class cellist, Josh Russell, CFI and concert pianist and Lyric Soprano Trisha Dunn will perform for the audience. The concert will start at 7:30 Saturday evening but please feel free to come early and enjoy the pre-concert activities. Jeff Palmer will be barbequeing brats and burgers and refreshments will be available. Please bring lawn chairs or a blanket for a comfortable seat. The concert will go on rain or shine and we certianly would enjoy seeing everyone there. If you'll be flying in please call ahead so we can reserve a parking space for you aircraft. SEE YOU SATURDAY THE 12!!!!!

MEMBER NEWS AND PROJECT REPORTS
EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION TO HOST OPEN HOUSE
The Marshalltown area chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will host a static display of some of their members kitbuilt, homebuilt and other aircraft on Saturday, June 12th from 1 to 5 pm at the Marshalltown Municipal Airport. Anyone who is interested in aviation or the possibility of building or owning your own aircraft are encouraged to attend. Chapter members of the local EAA will be available to show their aircraft and talk about building airplanes out of wood, fiberglass or metal. The public can use this opportunity to see some very well done examples of aviation that generates so much pleasure for their owners. Learn what it takes in terms of time and talent to create your own masterpiece. Local chapter members number about 35. As examples, Dale Benskin of Marshalltown flys his bi-plane, a Myers OTW, a yellow winged ,blue fuselage with its 5 cylinder radial engine over Marshalltown. It's distinctive sound turns heads skyward. The photograph accompanying this story is of Doug Boyd in his ultralight Challenger. Lyle Stolzman of Conrad has an RV-6. Larry Lukehart has a Mustang II, Paul Adams has a fiberglass Q-2 and a Citabria and David Cheung has an RV-6 under construction. Dave McCurry built a Taylor Monoplane out of wood more than 20 years ago and he continues to fly it regularly.Other members include Chapter President Garry Brandenburg, a one-third co-owner of a Cessna Skyhawk. Charles Kuhlman is a co-owner of a Cessna 150 with David Cheung, Harry Dirks, Les Risius. Of special note this year is an effort by the local EAA Chapter members to assist in a local effort to raise funds to help save a piece of Marshalltown history. Aviation enthusiasts would like to commemorate the Niederhauser family of brothers that brought aviation to Marshalltown. A memorial is envisioned to honor Glen, Harry, Robert, Ben and Bud Niederhauser. An additional name is also being pursued to call the local airport, "Marshalltown Airport-Niederhauser Field." Funds are being sought to defray the cost of the memorial and signage. Donations can be sent to The Niederhauser Field Fund, in care of Wells Fargo Bank, PO Box 310, Marshalltown, IA 50158. The EAA has more than 175,000 members world wide. There are more than 950 local chapters that form the grass roots of personal aviation. Founded by Paul H. Poberezny and his close friends in 1953, the EAA has grown into a world famous organization with its convention site located at Oshkosh, WI. Each year, during late July>>^

Tornado vs. Ultralite
Guess who wins??Corey's hangar and EasyRiser were wiped out by a tornado on May 22nd. Broke up the wings to the Ragwing too. Missed the house by 100 yds. Not much else to say. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

>> and early August, more that 12,000 aircraft of every description will travel to OSH. Over the course of the week long event, more than 800,000 people will attend.
Cutline: for photo by Garry Brandenburg Doug Boyd enjoys the freedom of flying his Challenger Ultralight aircraft over the central Iowa landscape. He built the airplane from a kit in 2002 and first flew it in 2003. You can see this airplane and others at an open house and static display of Experimental Aircraft Association projects on Saturday, June 12th, 1-5 pm at the Marshalltown Airport located 3 miles north of the City.

During my first night flight, I asked my instructor what to do if the engine failed.
"Get the plane gliding in a controlled decent, attempt to restart the engine and make a Mayday call", he explained. "The difference between day and night flying is that the terrain below will not be clearly visible, so turn on the landing light when you get close to the ground and if you like what you see, land."
"All right, but what if I don't like what I see?" I asked.
"Turn off the landing light.", he said.

Late Breaking News

Sport Pilot Rule Returned to OMB

The sport pilot/light-sport aircraft rulemaking package has been returned to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for final approval. OMB’s website acknowledges receipt of the rule on June 1, 2004. No deadline for final action is listed on the website. However, when EAA Vice President of Government and Industry Affairs Earl Lawrence visited OMB, along with fellow ASTM Committee chairmen Phillip Lockwood and Eric Tucker, they stressed the need for swift approval of the rule.

The rule, which had been withdrawn from the Office of Management and Budget by FAA in late March, is now back at OMB for what is hoped to be the final review before publication. FAA had withdrawn the rule to answer questions presented by OMB, in a procedural move that would keep the rule on-track instead of creating a major setback if it was completely rejected by OMB. This advancement is another major step forward for the rule. Once OMB approves the rulemaking package, it will be returned to FAA for publication in the Federal Register. This year’s AirVenture event will include a major focus on sport pilot as it provides an exciting opportunity for growth in many areas of the aviation community.
