March 2004
MEETING
WHEN:
FRIDAY the 12th
7PM
WHERE:
FISHER
COMMUNITY
CENTER

PROGRAM:
TBA

WHAT'S FLYIN' THIS WAY !!!
President Garry Brandenburg will be presenting the video 'Century of Flight' at our meeting on the 12th. It will be interesting to see how aviation has evolved over the past 100 years.
Newsletter editor Corey Butcher is compiling a yearbook type listing on planes and projects of what our members are building and flying. A nice brochure featuring our planes would be a nice handout for our Open House in June. A brief description and a favorite snapshot of your work(s) in progress would be appreciated ASAP.
See You Friday!

WHAT FLEW BY LAST MONTH !!!
We want to thank Joe Latham who brought his Garmin 295 GPS and demonstrated how nice it is to always know where you are when flying! It's a very useful tool on cross country trips, especially knowing where the closest airport is. Or as member Joe Fry mentioned, not getting lost in your own backyard. (Sorry Joe. Had to throw that in there ;-)
On the business end of the last meeting, we set up the chapter meeting and event dates for most of the year. Many of them are listed on page two. (Also notice that the calendar has been reformated to make sure dates don't get mixed up as on last months newsletter.)
Thanks to all members in attendance last month. Bring a friend next time!

CORRECTION
The effort to add 'Niederhauser Field' to the title of the Marshalltown Municipal Airport, does not constitute a name change. It is an addition to commemorate the founding brothers.

PROJECT REPORTS

Rocky's Pitts
Rocky Hilton has been busy rebuilding his Pitts and presently is getting the ailerons back on the wings.

Charles and Harry's Q2
Charles Kuhlman reported that the rebuild of the Q2 is coming along well and hopefully will be flying this year.

Garry May Fly More
President Garry Brandenburg announced that he will be retiring this year from the Marshall County Conservation Board. This obviously means he will have a chance to fly around the world in his Cessna 172. (Well at least around the US of A a couple, three, times, eh? ;^)
Daves Prop
Dave McCurry has lots of fun flying his Taylor Monoplane, so to fulfill his building bug, he is building a propeller. Should be fun to see when done, Dave!

Rays Bipe
Ray Robinson's Wiley Post biplane is at the Ames airport awaiting an annual so he can get the final inspection for airworthiness. Ray was able to get his plane reregistered with the FAA after a lot of head scratching and head ache! But test flights are in sight.

Joe Gets Weighed
Member Joe Fry set up his Hovey DeltaBird for weight and balance computations. To make a long story short, Joe has to figure out how to lose about 30 lbs, but it is balanced for flight. Warmer weather will tell the tale.
