Chili Fly-in
FEBRUARY 2005
MEETING
WHEN:
THURSDAY the 10th
7 PM
WHERE:
Fisher Community Center
Marshalltown, IA

PROGRAM:
TBA

WHAT FLEW BY LAST MONTH !!!
Well, it's obvious the winter doldrums have set in. When we arrived at the Fisher Center last month, there was no one there to open up for us, so Garry made some impromptu signs and we headed over to the Hy-Vee Deli across the street. If it makes any of you who were there feel any better, I did receive word from another Iowa EAA chapter who also met at a Hy-Vee Deli! Maybe we could hold an all-Iowa EAA fly-in at the Hy-Vee Deli, eh? Hopefully spring will be here soon and we can get back to some serious aviating!
For some, getting to a mid-winter fly-in is just the ticket for chasing away those doldrums. See the report on page 3 for the details.

WHAT'S FLYIN' THIS WAY !!!
As far as I know, we are SUPPOSE to try and meet again at the Fisher Center on THURSDAY THE 10TH. Hopefully someone will be there this time to let us in. We can at least gather in the parking lot and take it from there if we can't get in. If Garry is back from Africa, I'm sure he will have a lot to share. Let's help each other get thru this winter by showing up and sharing some airplane stories!

Iowa Falls To Hold Monthly Breakfast
Word is in that Kevin Knutson will resume hosting the airport breakfast on the second Saturday of every month beginning this month. Fly-in or drive-in for laid back hangar flying.
Dave Cheung Moves to Hangar 29
We haven't seen much of Dave lately, but he HAS been working on his RV-6. He has moved it to the airport and is working on getting the plane ready for a late spring test run. Dave has a test pilot lined up for first flights, then after all is well, he will try and get a few hours in it before he has it painted. As with everyone else, warmer weather will be welcome to help along the building schedule.
Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro Donated to EAA Museum
Historic aircraft to perform flight demos at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

An aircraft considered revolutionary in its time will soon be in the EAA AirVenture Museum’s permanent collection in Oshkosh. Stephen Pitcairn has informed EAA that he will donate his airworthy Pitcairn PCA-2 autogiro Miss Champion (NC 11609), to take its place alongside EAA’s restored and airworthy Pitcairn Mailwing and PA-39 autogiro in the Pitcairn Aviation Hangar at historic Pioneer Airport. Miss Champion will also be on display during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2005 (July 25-31). Plus visitors get the added treat of seeing this aircraft fly; the PCA-2 will perform flight demonstrations during the week.
The CAF's B-29 and B-24 bombers will also be at Oshkosh to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII.

Dave's N3 Pup
Dave McCurry has been diligently working on his Pup rebuild. The bent parts on the fuselage are repaired. He will be building a new prop soon.

Corey Butcher has Gas
A new Gas Tank for his Voisin, that is. The radiator and tank are installed. Now to finish the wiring and see if the engine will run.
Ray Robinson
says he has commited 65 hours of aviating with his Aeronca Chief. Obviously, he's having fun!
ATTENTION!
I hate to do this, but we need to clean up our membership roster. I am mailing out your last newsletter if it's been over a year since you paid your membership dues. NOW is the time to contact an officer (listed on page one) and let them know of your intention to remain a member of the chapter. We would really like to see you stay a member and participate in our activities. And dues are only 10 bucks! Now how can you beat that??

Greenfield Aviation Museum

Ron Hodges, Jerry Wisecarver, Corey Butcher, and Ralph Briggs from Chapter 135 joined up on the 29th to attend the Annual Greenfield Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame's Chili dinner. It was a great winter day with many flyins. I don't know what the official count of people were there, but I would say at least 100. Maybe 200.
The museum held a few surprises. Some rare airplanes and powerplants are on display including an Aetna-Timm military trainer. Only 6 were built for a try at a military contract back in 1941. It didn't win the contract, but the one pictured below is the only remaining example.
If you ever get a chance to visit, it is well worth the time.
